Finally! Some Ready Player One News!
This morning, Entertainment Weekly posted the very first look at Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s novel, Ready Player One. The shot includes actor Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts (also known as “Parzival”), the novel’s main character, engaging in a world-wide virtual reality simulation called the OASIS.
What the hell is Ready Player One?
The 2011 best-selling novel from Ernest Cline is about a young man (Watts) in a dystopian future who, like nearly all of humanity, escapes the troubled real world by entering a massive virtual simulation called “The Oasis”. The creator of The Oasis passes away, but leaves a will detailing a scavenger hunt within the virtual world. Whoever can solve the hunt will inherit his fortune and corporation. A huge fan of 80’s pop culture, the Oasis’s creator crafts the scavenger hunt around puzzles dealing with the decade’s movies, music and video games.
Thus, the novel itself becomes one clever, exciting love letter to the 80’s. It’s a perfect project for Steven Spielberg – himself an icon 80’s cinema.
Thoughts on this first look.
Spielberg is taking some liberties, particularly with the main character. The novel describes Wade as being a chubby kid. It’s part of what makes him relatable and compelling. This could also mean one of the dynamic undertones of the novel – people living completely different lives online – might be lost in the adaptation. This shot absolutely nails Wade’s “refuge”, though – an van he converted into his own personal haven for plugging into The Oasis for hours at a time.
Hopefully we get a trailer soon.
The film is set to release in 2018, and given the subject matter it’ll require a hefty amount of post-production. As someone who loved the novel and can’t wait for the film, here’s hoping this shot opens the floodgates to more info and material.
