Peanut Butter Milkstout (Beer Review)

A creamy milkstout with a decent blend of peanut butter and chocolate.

A short distance away from Arizona State University’s main campus in Tempe, Arizona, you’ll find Sleepy Dog Brewery. An independent Arizona brewer until their sale to Chicago-based Two Brothers Brewery in January 2017, they gained a strong following with such beers as Red Rover Irish Red beer and their Wet Snout Milkstout.

Now, they’ve revisited their Wet Snout with a peanut butter and chocolate blend and re-dubbed the Peanut Butter Milkstout.

So, how is the beer?

The near-black brew pours from a can into about a half finger of thick, dark tan head. A strong, pleasing aroma of peanut butter is immediately evident. What ends up being great about this beer is the genuine chocolate and peanut butter taste. I wouldn’t rank it alongside the Peanut Butter Cup Porter from Uncle Bear’s, which I personally find to be the benchmark, but it’s a fine take on what’s becoming a trendy dark beer. There’s nothing fake-y or synthetic tasting about the stout.

The peanut butter and chocolate are strong but not overpowering, and the beer also has a nice malty, oat taste and the beer finishes with a satisfying bitterness. There’s moderate but thin lacing left on the glass afterwards.

With Two Brothers having purchased the brewery, chances of distribution for Sleepy Dog beers increases. If you’re able to find it in your market, give it a shot!
